Pomsky vs. Klee kai: Key Differences (Explained)

August 3, 2022

The Klee Kai breed is a purebred small dog of the spitz type, while the Pomsky is a medium-sized mix. Different breeds make these two puppies very different from each other.

Klee Kai breed is known as a “working dog,” whereas Pomsky is termed as a “designer dog.”

In fact, the Klee Kai breed is a small Alaskan Husky. They have been around since the 1970s, making them very old in the breeding world, while the Pomsky is a new breed.

Siberian Huskies, German Shorthaired Pointers, and Greyhounds were all used to make Alaskan Huskies. But they are now known to be a breed. To help you tell the difference between the Pomsky and the Alaskan Klee Kai, I’ll talk about their colors, sizes, personalities, and health. So, look at the features to get a clear picture:

Introducing the Klee Kai dog breed

Klee Kai breed is a relatively new breed of dog.

An American woman named Linda Spurlin made them in the 1970s. Spurlin started making a pet-sized Alaskan Husky after she met a Husky named Curious who was too small.

Spurlin used mostly Alaskan Huskies and a small amount of American Eskimo Dogs and Schipperkes to make the Alaskan Klee Kai.

Today, the only way to get a Klee Kai breed puppy is to breed two UKC-registered Alaskan Klee Kais. In 1997, the Klee Kai breed became a member of the UKC.

Introducing the Pomsky Breed

Pomskies are not purebred dogs like Alaskan Klee Kai, which is an important difference to keep in mind.

A Pomsky is a dog that is a combination of a Pomeranian and a Siberian husky. People think that the Pomsky breed started in the United States in the late 2000s.

One of the most popular “designer dogs” is this group of mixed-breed dogs. They have parts of both Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies in them. But there’s no way to know for sure which traits they’ll get from each parent.

The Pomeranian is a Spitz dog that comes from the Pomerania region in northern Germany and Poland along the Baltic Sea. Queen Victoria is credited with making Pomeranians smaller. They used to be about 30 inches tall, but now they are only 7 inches tall.

Siberian Huskies come from a tribe of nomadic Chukchi people in Siberia, Asia. Siberian Huskies were popular dogs in Alaska during the Gold Rush because they were good at pulling light loads over long distances.

These dogs came from Russia.

Klee Kai breed Size v Pomsky Size

Klee Kai breed was made to be small to medium-sized dogs.

The breed comes in standard, miniature, and toy sizes. Standard Klee Kai is between 15 and 17 inches tall, miniature Klee Kai is between 13 and 15 inches tall, and toy Klee Kai breed can grow to be 13 inches tall.

Klee Kai breed size is based on height, not weight, but most of them are between 15 and 20 pounds.

The AKKAOA says that not many of their puppies get too big (over 17 12″), but some do.

Since the Pomsky is not a breed, there is no standard for it like there is for the Alaskan Klee Kai. Because of this, these “designer dogs” don’t have the right shape.

The PCA says that breeders can’t promise a certain size, which is what they say. A 50/50 Pomsky could weigh anywhere from 15 to 25 lbs.

The UKC has a breed standard for Klee Kai breed breeders, but neither the American Kennel Club nor the UKC has one for Pomsky breeders.

Klee Kai breed Colors v Pomsky Colors

According to the breed standard, the Klee Kai breed can be black and white, gray and white, or red and white. But the AKKAOA website says that some Klee Kai breed is white, and some are dark.

Pomskies can be many different colors. Most of the time, the colors will be a mix of fawn, gray, black, brown, cream, and white. Since these dogs don’t have a “breed standard,” they don’t look the same.

Like their size, no one who breeds Pomsky can say for sure what color their puppies will be.

Klee Kai breed vs. Pomsky adaptability

Most people think of a dog’s ability to live in an apartment when they hear the word “adaptability,” so let’s start there.

All dogs are great, but not all of them are good for or suited to living in an apartment. A dog may be the worst breed for apartments because of its size, energy level, noise level, smell, or shedding.

The Klee Kai and Pomskys are good dogs for living in an apartment, which is good news.

Most dogs can be left alone for 6 to 8 hours, but some do better than others.

How to deal with hot weather

Depending on where you live, you should pick a dog that does well in both hot and cold weather.

Pomsky tolerates hot weather better than Alaskan Klee Kai.

When it’s hot, make sure there’s shade and water, and go out early in the morning or late at night when it’s cooler.

Also, don’t let your dog walk on the sidewalk. If the ground is too hot to touch for a few seconds with your hand, it’s too hot for paws.

What about the cold?

Most dogs don’t mind the cold until it gets below 45° F.

After that, some dogs who don’t like the cold might start to feel uncomfortable. When the temperature drops below 32° F, owners of small breed dogs, dogs with thin coats, and very young, old, or sick dogs should pay close attention to their pet’s health.

When the temperature drops below 20°F, all dog owners should be aware that their dogs could get sick from the cold, like hypothermia or frostbite.

Both breeds can handle cold weather well, so as long as you follow the rules above, they should be fine and might even enjoy the cold.

Klee Kai breed Temperament

When it comes to family, the Klee Kai breed is loyal and loving. Even though they were raised to be pets, they can be aloof or shy around strangers.

But Klee Kai will get used to meeting new people and being in new situations if he spends a lot of time with other people from a young age.

The Klee Kai dog breed isn’t big enough to be good guard dogs, but they are usually very alert and make good watchdogs.

Even though every dog is different, the Klee Kai breed is known for being good at getting away and having a strong drive to hunt.

Before bringing a Klee Kai breed home, you should ensure that your garden or yard can’t be broken into. You can work on their recall by training them over and over again, or you can hire an experienced dog trainer.

Some owners of Alaskan Klee Kais will say that their dogs have trouble with separation anxiety. But this problem isn’t just a Klee Kai problem. It’s a problem that can happen to both purebred and mixed-breed dogs.

Klee Kai breed is an active dog that needs 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise. They are a very active breed that is usually happy to run or even swim with their owner.

But they are adaptable dogs who will also be happy to cuddle up on the couch with their owner.

Pomsky Temperament

We can say with some certainty about some of the most important things to look out for in an Alaskan Klee Kai, but it’s harder to tell how a Pomsky puppy will act.

They might have personalities like their Pomeranian or Siberian husky parent.

On their website, the PCA hints that Pomsky are usually very talkative, which is a trait they get from both of their parents.

They like to be part of a family, and like the Siberian husky, they can be very social.

Even though Pomskies are not purebred like Alaskan Klee Kai, the PCA says that they are good at getting away, which is a trait that is often linked to Klee Kai.

Pomsky Breeders

A Pomsky is a dog that people made. The AKC and UKC do not recognize it as a breed.

On their website, the PCA says that there are “all kinds of Pomsky scams” by people who say they are breeders. The PCA warns people who want to buy a Pomsky to be very careful.

The PCA recommends some Pomsky breeders who have signed the club’s code of ethics on their website. If you really want a Pomsky puppy, you should do a lot of careful research before you buy one of these mixed dogs.

Klee Kai breeds vs. Pomsky lifespan

Undoubtedly, how well the dog is cared for is one of the most important factors in how long it lives. However, there are also other factors, especially the dog’s breed.

The Pomsky Club of America (PCA) says that anyone selling a Pomsky puppy for less than $2,000 is “likely running a scam.”
